Canon Information
Personality: Martha Jones is a woman who is a woman that has lived more in her 26 years than most people do in multiple lifetimes. Martha Jones is a champion. She may not always consider herself one, but at the heart of everything, it describes her to a tee. She, like her predecessors, has often found herself in life and death situations, her very existence hanging in the balance, all because she chose to follow a madman in a blue box. Martha has proven that she is not only intelligent and loyal but also a quick thinker with the ability to adapt to almost any situation and see things that most people cannot. She is truly a Doctor’s doctor, calling things as she sees them, not one to sugarcoat the truth even if it’s painful to hear. One could say that she has a natural bedside manner.
Martha is a determined woman with strength in her convictions but enough charm to cover up the rough edges of her delivery. Martha learned the hard way not to go into anything blindly, having fallen in love with the Doctor, only to have her feelings unreturned and thrown back in her face at every turn. Despite having Rose thrown in her face, she didn’t let that bitter disappointment get in the way of developing a relationship with the illustrious Rose when they finally met. Martha is confident and knows that she plays second fiddle to no one. She takes her responsibilities seriously and doesn’t let anyone, not even the Doctor stand in her way.
Martha is a peacekeeper both in her familial life and her professional life often acting as a go-between between her mother and her father and also her siblings. She has a temperament that lends itself well to acting as a go-between. That by no means makes her a pushover, far from it, it makes her accessible to help people both human and Alien. Martha is not a person that discriminates between humans and aliens. She has seen enough in her young life to know that everything is not always as it seems.
Don't let Marth's demeanor fool you, however, she suffers greatly from traveling the world with the Doctor. The stress of dealing with his expectations have caused a certain amount of PTSD. She suffers from nightmares and is firm in the belief that the Doctor asks too much of his Companions.

History: (Parts of her history were discussed with the Jack Harkness Player, and any information about Rose was used with express permission)
Martha Nightingale was born in London England to parents who cared more about how things looked than if their children were actually happy. They were wealthy but money didn't matter much to Martha. She was more of a nurturer and not of the mindset that money was able to solve all of the world's problems. She worked hard, studied, read every book she could get her fingers on. She kept her life mostly in order except for her books, which she had laying on any available flat surfaces. Her parents put a constant pressure on her to marry well, find a husband so that she would want for nothing. Martha felt nothing but pressure growing up, reminiscent of being judged far more harshly than her siblings. She is the middle child, but her folks always expected more of her maybe because she acted more maturely for her age.
Martha wanted to be close to her parents but often found herself confiding in her sister. Martha's family strived for wealth but money was never that important to Martha. To be clear, she understood the importance of the Pound and what it could do to help people but the materialistic aspects of having money never appealed to her. She got an allowance but only used what she needed to survive and donated the rest.
The only thing that Martha ever wanted to do was help people just like the doctors in her books and plays. She worked hard all through school graduating at the top of her class, wanting to do something good with her life and her work. Her parents insisted she go to Oxford, meet a wealthy man, and marry continuing the line. Martha unbeknownst to her parents applied to a school in America where she knew that her parents would leave her alone. She met and roomed with Jack’s sister Rose Porter, with whom she became fast friends with. She never wanted to go home for the Hols, so she often spent the holidays with the Porters. Rose's family was so different and completely opposite to Martha's own experience that she found it peaceful. Martha made friends easily and after a few weekends, was chatting up Jack Porter as if she had known him her entire life. Martha bonded with Jack and even after graduation, she still saw Jack on a semi-regular basis, meeting for a pint or a quick meal. Samantha had the good fortune of being a peer of John Smith. She is a sucker for an intelligent man and they dated for a time before realizing that they made much better mates than lovers. They stayed in contact over the years, exchanging texts and emails coupled with the occasional phone call.
Martha took to living and working in New York like a duck to water. She loved not only the bright lights of the big city and also the solitude of her tiny hole in the wall apartment. She wanted to live life on her terms no matter what sacrifice she had to make. Several years of hard work and her trust fund that her parents couldn’t find a loophole to deny her; finally used the money to open a free fully funded clinic, open to anyone who needed medical help. Her parents were thinking that she could use the money to get a husband and therefore did not stipulate what the money was to be used for, a costly mistake for sure but one that Martha used to her advantage
Martha spent a lot of time running from her past, her family, a life where she wasn’t tied down to any job or any one place. She finally found a sense of peace and a center of gravity so to speak. She took pride in the work she did at the clinic. It represented something that she did on her own, independently of her parents. It should be noted that Martha loved her family with everything in her and wanted to reach out to them but the apprehension of what they might say always stopped her from indulging in that particular whim.
Personality: Martha is a fearless woman. She thinks nothing of jumping headlong into the unknown, even if she may or may not fail. Failure, in her mind, was not an option but it is always a possibility. Martha is not one to dwell on what might happen but the possibility was always something that sat in the back of her mind. Sam doesn’t let the unknown stop her from doing anything that she sets her mind to.
She is driven, not letting anything stop her from achieving her goals. The one thing that most people don’t expect from meeting a woman as focused as Sam, is that she is a people person. She genuinely cares about her patients and her friends. When she calls you a friend or a patient there is nothing that she wouldn’t do in order to make sure that her friends are happy and safe, her patients healthy and whole. Sam loves a good puzzle, the more complex the better in her mind. She is like a dog with a bone and once she gets something in her head, it is difficult to get her to let it go. That quality is what makes her such a good doctor.
Martha is far from single-minded. She takes her job seriously but she knows how to let loose and have fun. She doesn’t take crap from anyone, man or woman, and does not shy away from confrontation but she is astute and knows when and where to pick her battles. Martha is scrappy, even though she came from money, she doesn't rely on it to achieve her goals. She is used to hard work and doesn't shy away from using her blood, sweat, and tears to get what she wants. She lives a solitary life but she is by no means lonely. She makes friends and reaches out to people all the time, just so she doesn’t lose the human connection.
Physical description: She looks the same.
